Patreon 'Lens' Rips Off Snapchat Stories
Step aside Snapchat and Instagram. The increasingly ubiquitous "stories" format is headed to a new, somewhat unlikely place: Patreon.
The crowdfunding site, which is meant for recurring funding rather than a i-fourth dimension campaign, just launched a stories clone in its mobile app, dubbed Lens. The feature lets creators "easily share sectional, behind-the-scenes content with their patrons," the company wrote in a weblog post.
"Every creator has a behind the scenes. Backside each song, novel, video, comic, or painting lies a magical and creative journey," Patreon'due south Johnny Winston wrote. "Patrons love to come across this process — the unpolished piece of work, the messy studios, the spur-of-the-moment inspiration."
With Lens, information technology volition be easier than ever for creators to share these snippets. Similar Snapchat and Instagram stories, all photos and videos posted via Patreon Lens will be displayed in a serial and disappear after 24 hours. Patrons can share this content with all their followers or only paying patrons.
The feature is available in the latest version of the Patreon iOS and Android app; click the Lens icon in the peak-right corner, upload photos and videos, and voila. Patrons with the app will get a notification about the new content and tin can view it past clicking the circular image at the top of a creator's page.
Patreon may exist embracing the stories format to differentiate itself from Kickstarter'south Drip service. Announced in November, Drip is designed to help people "fund and build a community around their ongoing creative practice," Kickstarter Creator and Chief Founder Perry Chen wrote in a blog mail at the time.
